Mockingbird Valley Premier Battles Back in Overtime to Open Their US Open Cup Journey

In their first-ever appearance in Open Cup qualifying, the Louisville, Kentucky club needed extra time to get past the Southern Indiana Guardians FC of the UPSL Premier Division, breaking a 1-1 tie early in the first overtime period and pulling away for a 3-1 victory this past weekend.

Mockingbird Valley Premier came into the match off a 9-1-0 regular season in the Ohio Valley Premier League, and it showed early character when the Guardians matched them goal for goal through regulation. Rather than settle for penalty kicks, the club found the answer in the opening minutes of extra time, scoring twice more to close out the win and punch their ticket to the Second Qualifying Round.

“It’s special seeing a club take that first step forward in their inaugural trip to this tournament,” said Jason Brown, League Director of OVPL. “The US Open Cup is one of the great traditions in American soccer, and watching Mockingbird Valley Premier compete and find a way to win in overtime says a lot about the character of this group. We’re proud of them, and we’re excited to see where this run takes them.”

What’s Next

Mockingbird Valley Premier will play in the Second Qualifying Round on October 3–4, 2026. We’ll share match details, including opponent and venue, as they’re confirmed.

A Growing Open Cup Tradition in OVPL

Mockingbird Valley Premier isn’t the first OVPL club to test itself on this stage, but this win adds to a streak the league has built one year at a time. OVPL has sent a representative into Lamar Hunt US Open Cup qualifying in each of the last several cycles: Valhalla FC advanced multiple rounds in the 2024 qualifying tournament, falling just short in the winner-take-all Fourth Qualifying Round.

Now it’s Mockingbird Valley Premier’s turn, and their overtime win keeps the league’s Open Cup presence alive for a fifth straight year, with a real chance to push further than any OVPL club has gone before.
